Basso

About the Project

Gastropub in St. Louis, MO ▪ 7,000 sf ▪ Capacity 170 ▪ Historic Adaptive Reuse ▪ Most Enhanced Award, Landmarks Association of St. Louis

Basso is a gastropub in a unique basement space with cavernous ceilings at the historic Cheshire hotel campus in St. Louis, MO.  To enter Basso, you descend a broad, curving stairwell into a cavernous basement.  Gas lamps flicker along the walls, casting long shadows on diners seated in cozy booths.  The massive bar at the center of the dining room is modern, with sleek liquor bottles and a distinctive tap handle for each of the 32 beers on draft.  Flat-screen monitors broadcast sports channels.  The open kitchen features a wood-burning pizza oven and a rotisserie spit, evoking a rustic, timeless feel.  In the renovation process the original terrazzo was uncovered and restored, and the existing beams defining the tall structure - exposed and featured.

Basso is the recipient of the Most Enhanced Award by the Landmarks Association of St. Louis, upon its completion in 2012.  The project was completed during Daniela Grushevska’s employment at Lawrence Group and photographed by Debbie Franke Photography, Inc.
